What happens to a lead after a missed call.

By Stromation · updated July 2026 · practical guide

A customer with a broken AC calls three companies. The first one that answers usually wins the job. That is the whole story of missed calls, but the numbers behind it are worth knowing, because most owners underestimate how much of their demand dies in the gap between ring and voicemail.

The numbers, from real call data

  • Only about 52% of callers to home-services businesses ever reach a live person, according to Invoca's 2026 benchmarks report covering more than 70 million calls (source).
  • Invoca's platform data also shows roughly 27% of home-services calls go unanswered, and fewer than 3% of callers sent to voicemail leave a message (source). The other 97% just move on.
  • Even answered calls leak: ServiceTitan's data across 3,000+ businesses found trades book only 42% of inbound calls into jobs, and shops with fewer than five techs book just 24% (source).

You may have seen scarier stats floating around, like "85% of missed callers never call back." We could not trace that one to any real study, so we do not use it. The verified numbers above are bad enough.

What the caller actually does next

  1. They hear your voicemail. Odds are they hang up without leaving a message.
  2. They go back to their search results. Your competitors are one tap away, and one of them answers.
  3. The winner is decided by speed, not skill. The company that responds first gets to quote first, and the Harvard Business Review response-time study showed contacting a lead within an hour makes you roughly seven times likelier to qualify them than waiting even one more hour (source).

What closing the gap looks like

You cannot answer every call. Trucks, attics and crawlspaces exist. What you can do is make sure a missed call gets a response in seconds instead of never:

  1. Instant text-back: the missed caller gets a message from your business within seconds: sorry we missed you, how can we help?
  2. Qualification: the conversation collects the job, the location and the urgency, politely and honestly.
  3. A record and an alert: the lead lands in your system with a summary, and a human takes over the moment one is needed.

The honest caveat: if your calls already route through a platform like Jobber or Housecall Pro, some text-back ability may exist as an add-on you have not switched on. Check that first. The bigger gaps are usually after-hours coverage, qualification and follow-up, which is what a full recovery system handles.
